Second community day - drop in center. Had a meeting before breakfast about what we would do and planned who would do what and how. Then we all gave some money so we could buy food. After breakfast we went to the garden to get some spinach before we headed to Gweru. We first arrived at the center where we got a little introduction, then we walked to the store which took around 20 min. On our way there we saw how and where some of the street kids live. Just in the bushes, they didn't have anything except a small fire/cooking place in the middle which was completely broken and then some broken car parts which they hid under during rain. We got to the store and got our groceries, then we went to the ATM to take out money and then headed to the butcher for some meat. On our way there we met some of the street kids and they were just so happy to see us and even though im new and they don't know me they just ran up and hugged and greeted me with the biggest smiles. Then we headed back to the drop-in center, it was so impressive to walk around in the city cause people just sit there on the street, theres dirt and garbage everywhere and a tree was on fire and no one didn't really care. We got to the center and prepared the food, two boys were already there so i sat down and teached some. First we read a book and learned the watch. Then i sat with a boy for 2-3h and he was so sweet and really tried so hard and really wanted to learn so we did the alphabet, some math and reading. These kids don't go to school so when we come is the only time they get education. Some more kids came in to join but many of them weren't really interested in learning stuff and you couldn't really "reach" them. They just wanted to talk and be very close to you. No personal space awarness haha. Then it was time for lunch so we gave them the food we had prepared. After that we went to play football and they were so excited and happy and so into the game. Then we went back and said goodbye to them and headed back to AP. I haven't really realised yet or processed todays visit to the street kids cause it is just so unreal. They have nothing, no family, no material things, only one set of clothes and shoes that theyre wearing and are completely broken and shredded and either too small or too big for them to fit, they don't even have a roof over their head or anything. Some of them drink and sniff glue and theyre just kids, some of them are around 14-15 but look like 7 because of the glue they don't grow anymore. It's hard to know that they have to do that to themselved. It's so hard to realise and i can't believe how happy they are even though they don't have anything at all. We then came home to AP and went for a sunset cruise so we just sat on the boat and watched the sunset. Then we had meeting, dinner, waffles for desert and now im off to bed!
